This lovely, historic quilt is a tribute to the community service of a group of folks in Lee County, N.C. who, starting in 1929 and through 1937 (during the Great Depression) volunteered as the "Oak Grove" home demonstration (H.D.) agents to help others in their community with particular tasks. In this case, the Oak Grove Club agents were known as having "a special knack for using feedsacks" and made all types of clothing such as suits for men, women and children, purses, shirts, summer coats and dresses out of feedsacks. In 1937 the Oak Grove H.D. agents changed direction and the name of the club changed to the "Shallow Well Home Demonstration Club."

The quilt has the embroidered signatures of more than 20 men and women, including Beulah Willis, Pauline Corey, Michael Moon and Mrs. E.S. Mills. Logos from the feedsacks that were used to make the quilt can also be seen in many of the signature blocks. The area around the signature blocks has been hand-embroidered and the entire quilt has been hand-quilted in very tiny stitches in a grid pattern.

The grey, red, yellow and white striped border goes around all four sides. The back is a white muslin/feedsack material that has been turned to the front and hand-stitched to form the binding. The cotton batting is lightweight.

The quilt is in excellent condition with no condition issues found.

This lovely quilt is clean and soft and measures 72 inches by 82 inches. From a smoke-free, pet-free home. Shown on a queen-size bed.
