This is a rarely found Giddap or Donkey Quilt, circa 1930s. This pattern was first published by the Kansas City Star in 1932 and became popular during the presidential campaign of Franklin D. Roosevelt the same year. The quilt is entirely hand quilted and much of the stitching is by hand as well. The quilting is in diagonals throughout the body and in large diamonds along the red and brown border that spans all four sides.
The back is a white cotton while the binding is a bright red cotton that has been machine stitched to the front and hand-stitched to the back. The cotton batting is very lightweight.
The quilt is in excellent vintage condition with some age-related issues, including some yellowing of the white fabric and some scattered tan dots, the loss of some of the quilting stitches some minor fading of the red fabric in a few areas.
It is approximately 79 inches by 88 inches and comes from a smoke-free and pet-free home. Pictured on a queen-size bed.
