This is a circa 1940s-1950s Ring Around the Posy Quilt made from a Quilt Kit sold by one of a handful of kit makers at the time (Bucilla, Paragon, Home Needlecraft, etc). The kits provided all of the materials needed to make the quilt, but the at-home quilter still did all of the work, including the piecework, applique, embroidery and, most importantly, the hand-quilting.
The hand-quilting on this very large quilt must have taken months. The quilting is in a diamond pattern with the exception of the large "posies" that have been individually quilted and the quilting that outlines the applique work. The stitches are tiny and even and for the most part follow a pencil outline that can still be seen on this never-washed, unused quilt.
The applique flowers, including the border flowers, have all been hand-stitched to the top and the embroidery is also hand-stitched.
The sawtooth edging has been machine stitched to the front and to a white, cotton binding that has been hand-stitched to the back. The back is also a white cotton and the cotton batting is lightweight.
The quilt is in excellent, unused condition. There are two very small and very light - difficult to photograph - tan marks that are about 1/16 inch wide in two places near the floral border.
The quilt is approximately 86 inches by 98 inches and comes from a smoke-free and pet-free home. Pictured on a queen-size bed.
