This circa 1920s "Old Garden Wall" quilt is made from hundreds of rectangles of vintage feed sack fabrics expertly pieced together and simply quilted in straight lines (by hand) up and down the "steps" of the Old Garden Wall. It is bordered with a lovely pink, green and grey print and the binding is thin and matches the solid green back.

It has a light, summer-weight cotton batting and is in generally excellent condition with no stains, discolorations or holes. Someone has added a cotton strip to the back for display purposes.

The only condition issue is with one of the fabrics used in one string of "steps". This was probably the fanciest fabric in the entire quilt because -- unlike the rest that are all cotton -- this fabric was partially made of silk, probably from a decorative or novelty sack. Unfortunately, during the late 1800s and early 1900s, metallic salts (lead, iron or tin) were added to silks to increase their weight, and over time the salts caused those silks to deteriorate or "shatter." That's what has happened to the silk portion of the fabric on those rectangles - the silk portion has partially shattered (see photos). It is hardly noticeable on this quilt, but it's there and requires the quilt to be treated with extra care.

This lovely quilt is clean and soft and measures 70 inches by 83 inches. From a smoke-free, pet-free home. Shown on a queen bed.
