This Bethlehem Star Antique Quilt is circa 1933 and is not only a wonderful quilt, it has a wonderful history. The quilt top was made in 1933 by Vernetta, who was a 14-year-old Native American student at a one-room, 24-student schoolhouse near her Indian Reservation in rural Idaho. Vernetta made the quilt for her 19-year-old teacher, Neda Dall-olio or "Miss Dollie." Sixty-six years later, in 1999, Neda Dall-olio Gabardi gave the quilt top to her great-niece, Debra Daniels McDannald, of Columbia, Missouri. Debra then had Rita Cooley Vickers, of Shelbina, Missouri, put on the border and batting and add the intricate quilting 25 years ago, in 2000. This history is recounted in detail on a panel on the back of the quilt (see photos).
The quilt appears to never have been used or washed - the colors are vibrant and beautiful and it maintains the patina of a freshly sewn quilt. The piecing is crisp and precise and the colors and fabrics harmonize together beautifully. The quilting is very intricate in close-together diagonals through most of the quilt and in astounding "flowers" at each of the corners.
The back is a white cotton and the binding is a narrow green that matches the top and has been stitched to the back. The batting is cotton and lightweight.
The quilt is in excellent condition with no condition issues noted.
It is clean, feels and looks new, and comes from a smoke-free and pet-free home. It measures 74 inches by 74 inches. Shown on a queen-size bed, but the quilt has a sleeve sewn to the back for display purposes.
