This is a Brickwork Antique Quilt, circa 1900-1910, made from more than 1,000 small "bricks" of rectangular cotton fabric. From a Maryland collector. This pattern was first published in 1897 by the Ladies Art Company. Today, several different quilt designs have taken over the name "Brickwork" but this is the original pattern.

The quilting is as intricate as the piecework, with every brick outlined with tiny quilting stitches throughout the entire quilt. While many quilts of this era were made from leftover scraps of fabric, the fabric in this quilt is uniform throughout and appears to have been purchased specifically for this quilt. It is also more dense and substantial cotton than found in feed or flour sacks.

There are three border fabrics - red, green and then white -- used on all sides of the quilt and the quilting continues at the border in twisted rope and braided rope patterns. The binding is thin, bright red cotton and has been hand-stitched to both sides of the quilt. The back is bright white cotton and the cotton batting is lightweight.

The quilt is in excellent condition with the only condition issue noted being some minor starts to possible future seam separation in a several of the red and green blocks.

It is clean and soft and approximately 69 inches by 97 inches. From a smoke-free, pet-free home. Shown on a queen bed.
