This Cactus Basket or Desert Rose Quilt is circa 1890-1910 and has been densely hand-quilted in very tiny stitches. The quilting is in diamonds in the white body of the quilt, and in double lines (1/4 inches apart) on the baskets. The quilter has done double outlines of the cacti, while the quilting along the border is in diagonals.
The back is white cotton which has been turned to the front and hand-stitched to form the binding. The cotton batting is very, very lightweight.
The quilt is in excellent condition, with overall age-related fading of the fabrics (see photos) and some tiny spots of deterioration along the edge of the binding that will, in time, lead to fraying. Thus far, however, the binding is intact and there is no fraying.
This lovely quilt is clean and soft and measures 69 inches by 74 inches. From a smoke-free, pet-free home. Shown on a queen bed.
