This Flying Geese Quilt is circa 1890-1900 and comes from a Pennsylvania collector who found it in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Though it is more than 125 years old, the quilt appears to have never been washed.

As is typical of quilts from that era, fabric was collected - not purchased - to make a quilt and the result is a quilt with geese that are made of multiple different fabrics in some rows while in others the same fabric is used for each of the geese. The same is true of the solid fabrics in between - they are pieced together with seams to make up a row.

The quilting is by hand with each of the geese individually quilted in a triangle pattern while each row between the geese is quilted in a repeating swirl pattern, and the border is quilted in multiple straight lines. The wine-colored binding is narrow and hand-stitched to each side. The back is a white cotton and the cotton batting is lightweight.

The quilt is in excellent condition. There are some age-related discolorations (brown spots) on some of the prints and one tiny -- less than the size of a dime -- spot on the tan fabric.

It is clean, soft and comes from a smoke-free and pet-free home. It measures 68 inches by 94 inches. Shown on a queen-size bed.
