I call this Crazy Quilt, which is circa 1890-1900, the Lucky Crazy Quilt because its maker incorporated just about every good luck/good fortune symbol of the time, including a four-leaf clover, a horseshoe (positioned to catch the luck), a goose (symbolizing prosperity), a lit candle (symbol of hope), the Sun, Mountains and many more. This crazy quilt is covered with embroidery and even fabric-painted motifs and is signed "Mrs. R.J." The name "Helena" is also incorporated into the quilt as are many flowers, butterflies, birds, a canoe and even a dog.
The quilt has no batting (most crazy quilts don't) and is primarily made from satins and velvets, with a blue cotton border and the same blue cotton as a backing.
It is in very good condition, with two shattered silks and a several places where it appears excess moisture has caused fabrics to bleed into their neighbors. Overall it is a lovely example of crazy quilts from its era.
It measures 80 inches by 62 inches and comes from a smoke-free and pet-free home. It is shown on a queen-size bed.
