This is a very rare, elaborate and beautiful Split Leaf Philodendron Quilt made sometime from the late 1890s to the early 1900s. From a Delaware collector.
It has been entirely hand appliqued and hand-quilted with incredibly tiny stitches. The applique has also been attached with tiny hand-stitches while the quilting outlines the appliques and is in close-together crisscrosses throughout the rest of the quilt.
The back is white cotton as is the narrow binding, which has a unique, thin green edge. The binding is also hand-stitched to both sides of the quilt. The cotton batting is lightweight.
Perhaps the most amazing part of this amazing quilt is that is is still in excellent condition with overall yellowing of the white fabrics (due to age) and some minor discolorations on the front (please see photos). There are also discolorations on the back that do not come through to the front. There are no tears, seam separations or fabric deterioration.
It is a very long quilt, measuring approximately 79 inches by 108 inches and comes from a smoke-free and pet-free home. Pictured on a queen-size bed.
