  • Details
This is an unusual Double Irish Chain Quilt, circa 1880-1890s. Most Irish Chain quilts are made of two complementary fabrics -- at least one of them a solid color, like white. This one is made of three patterned fabrics - no solids - and it is lovely. The piecing is expertly done with crisp corners and patchwork that lines up perfectly. There is a triple striped border on two sides and a double-stripe border on the other two sides - both borders are 3.5 inches wide. The hand-quilting is in outlines of the patchwork and in double lines through the borders.

The back is an off-white muslin, while the very narrow binding is made of three different patterned fabrics that have been hand-stitched to both sides. The cotton batting is lightweight.

This sturdy quilt is in excellent condition with minor fading of some of the fabrics and some fraying of the binding. The muslin back has several tan marks that do not show or effect the front.

This quilt is clean and soft and measures 64 inches by 74 inches. From a smoke-free, pet-free home. Shown on a queen-size bed.
