This is a Wreath of Wild Roses or Kentucky Rose Quilt, circa 1880-1890s, and is made of mercerized cotton which gives the quilt a glazed look similar to chintz. The quilt has been finely hand-quilted in diagonals, shells, outlines of the applique, and twisted braids.
The back is mercerized off-white cotton and the binding is a light pink cotton that has been machine stitched to the front and hand-stitched to the back. The cotton batting is very lightweight.
This beautiful quilt is in excellent antique condition with some age-related issues, including some uneven fading of some of the green and pink fabrics (see photos) and several dark dots and one 3/4 inch dark mark (see photos) that appears to have been made by a dark pen.
The quilt is clean, very soft and comes from a smoke-free and pet-free home. It measures 80 inches by 89 inches. Shown on a queen-size bed.
